Drive-By Big Band is a professional big band that was formed by Ryan Chapman and Major Bailey in 2009 to promote jazz big band music in the metro Atlanta area. This group is comprised primarily of Atlanta’s top professional musicians and incorporates a number of talented college students in order to enhance the overall sense of community among local artists. Ryan and Major were both awarded the opportunity to continue their education at the University of Miami and decided to create an incarnation of Drive-By Big Band in South Florida based on the same principles as the original.
Drive-By Big Band Miami is a powerful dynamic 18 piece swinging band influenced by many of the great jazz big bands such as Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, U.S. Air Forces Airmen of Note, U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dianne Schuur, and many others. The band will be comprised of seasoned professional musicians from the South Florida area and exceptionally talented students from the University of Miami’s Frost School of music.
